Nile Wilson secures England gold in epic finish

During the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, I covered all the gymnastics competitions for the Games News Service.

Nile Wilson secures England gold in epic finish

Nile Wilson has secured England’s third consecutive Commonwealth Games men’s individual all-around gymnastics gold with a score of 84.950 points.

The final was decided on the very last apparatus, as only 0.25 points separated the top-three gymnasts heading into the horizontal bar at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre.

After five of six apparatus, it was Wilson’s teammate James Hall who led the standings, with Wilson and Rio 2016 Olympic all-around finalist Marios Georgiou both in second place. Georgiou was the first one up on the last event, but after a good routine and an all-around total of 83.750, was quickly outscored by Hall (83.975).

Wilson, the Rio bronze medallist on horizontal bar, was the last gymnast to compete on his best apparatus and scored a 15.100 to claim the gold with a total of 84.950 points.

“It really went down to the last piece, you just can’t write it. To be able and to hit that routine, it’s indescribable. To finish like we did and get gold and silver, it’s the best feeling,” Wilson said.

Hall said the final at GC2018 was astounding. “A competition like this, when it’s going down to the wire, it’s not often you see that. I don’t think my heart can take many more of these.”

Wilson followed in the footsteps of Luke Folwell and Max Whitlock, who claimed the title in 2010 and 2014. It was Wilson’s second Commonwealth Games all-around medal, as he took bronze at Glasgow 2014.

Georgiou won Cyprus’ first ever men’s artistic gymnastics all-around medal with bronze. “I didn’t think too much about getting any medals, I just wanted to do the best I could. To finish with this is great,” Georgiou said.
