Canada’s Brittany Rogers seeks happier ending after Rio 2016 misery

Canadian gymnast Brittany Rogers was heartbroken when she fell off the uneven bars at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, a mistake which cost her team a place in the finals by a mere 0.168 points.

“I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Rio. It is a motivation for me,” Rogers, 24, said after podium training at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre on Wednesday (April 4).

During podium training, a dress rehearsal for the competition, Rogers had a flashback to what happened in Rio.

“I fell on the same skill again. It is very difficult for me not to think about Rio, as it is the last competition in my mind.

“If Rio had been my last competition in gymnastics, I would have had so many regrets.

“In the back of my mind, I know that this could be my last competition. I am trying to cherish every moment that I have. Every competition means more to me now.”

Last competition

Rogers is hoping for a happier ending at Gold Coast 2018 than in Rio. “If you can take a picture of me smiling, that would probably be a good indication of my last competition.”

The women’s artistic gymnastics team qualification and team final take place on Friday 6 April at Coomera.
